Galilee

We just spent the last few weeks in Galilee staying on a kibbutz called Ein Gev.

We swam and field tripped galore! Here are some of the places we visited:

Nazareth

Church at Nain where Elisha raised the widow's son from the dead - here we had a beautiful devotional by Brother Huntsman about miracles and losing loved ones...def a highlight of the trip!

This is where the apostle Paul was tried in Herod's court and essentially the kick off point for the spread of Christianity to the Western world.

Meeting house for the Tiberias Branch with a beautiful overlook of the water. We put together a little musical number last minute for sacrament meeting "Dear to the Heart of the Shepherd" - this branch had an extra special feeling...Elder Holland refers to it as "Jesus' home ward"

America Rocks!

America Rocks!! (Hope of America anyone?)

This is long over due but I thought some might still be interested to see how the JC celebrates the 4th!

Saw this in some car in East Jerusalem! Wahoo!

The kitchen staff prepared the most American meal possible: fried chicken, corn on the cob, baked potatoes and apple pie (which I missed out on unfortunately)

These cute Ludlow brothers are such a help to Marissa and her poor broken ankle!

This is the new fence they put up that adds to the wall between Jerusalem and Bethlehem/West Bank. A very sad thing - Brother Huntsman told us they just put it up a few months ago and before that, shepherds would still walk with their sheep to the village on the other side to do business.

If we lift the wooden latch may we go in?

May we stroke the creatures there oxen and sheep?
May we peep like them and see Jesus asleep?
If we touch His tiny hand, will He awake?
Will He know we've come so far just for His sake?

Great kings have precious gifts and we have naught.
Little smiles and little tears are all we've brought.
For all weary children Mary must weep.
Here on this bed of straw, sleep children sleep.

Petra

Meet my camel Zuzu!

I rode her from the main plaza back to the Treasury at the entrance and we bonded!

She was so sweet and cute and I loved her!

Overview of the day: couldn't find my camera in the morning so rather than get briefed and loaded up with water, I ran around frantically looking for it. I was borderline heat stroke the whole day...

Walked through the Siq which opened up to the Treasury (where Indiana Jones was filmed!) and hiked up to the Monastery (before coming I thought they were the same place...they look really similar)

The look out had an incredible view of the Dead Sea/Jordan Rift Valley and you could see the route that Lehi and his family probably went when leaving Jerusalem.

Even though I was dehydrated the whole day -- I still had a blast!

Carol Frogley Ellertson

To take a break from all the Jerusalem updates (and since I never did a Mother's Day post), I wanted to highlight my beautiful, wonderful, brilliant mother!

I had a really special experience yesterday afternoon:

So much to the JC's surprise and elation, we were told Tuesday morning that Elder Jeffery R. Holland was coming to visit and stay at the center! He is here on vacation with his family, not for the church, and so he is gone mostly...we see him every now and then. But yesterday afternoon, I happened to be sitting out in the lounge on the 5th floor when he and his wife came down the stairs from an outing. They were going around saying 'hello' to everyone - he was sporting an Under Armor shirt and some rockin' shades.

As he came over to me, I mentioned how I was Keith Frogley's granddaughter (he used to live in my grandpa's ward years ago). He got excited and asked who my parents were and when I told him my mom's name he yelled for Sister Holland to come over and meet me and said to her,

"If she isn't Carol Frogley's daughter I don't know who is!"

I cannot tell how much this meant to me...my mom is the greatest woman I know and that someone could identify me as her daughter is the biggest compliment they could possibly give!

She is an outstanding teacher, a great wife and an amazing mother and grandmother with lots of love to go around :)

Jordan Highlights

Machaerus

This is where Salome danced and demanded John the Baptist's head on a platter.

Jerash

Who would have thought this gem would be right in the middle of Jordan? Just as big and almost as cool as Ephesus!

These bagpipers were rockin' out! They accompanied us while we sang 'Praise to the Man'. This was extra cool since we visited Jerash on June 27 (the day Joseph Smith was killed)...

chills!?!

Probably the least exciting part of the trip...walking through a long museum of old cars... really? Cars?

Hotter than hot! But worth it...

After our day trips, we had lots of free time to explore Amman and one night we stayed out late at a sports bar in the middle of town to watch the Eurocup Semi's!

Ein Karem

Ein Karem is the place where Elizabeth and Zacharias lived when Mary came to visit while they were both pregnant. This town today is a little slice of Europe in the middle of beautiful, green hills. I stepped out of the van and honestly felt like I was on a different continent! SO green!

And churches, churches, CHURCHES!!

And what's an outing without some gelato...
